JOSHUA MAKANA PUTERBAUGH

We are pleased to announce the new addition to our family. Joshua Makana Puterbaugh was born on October 16, 2009 at 5:42 am. He weighed 8 pounds and 9.6 ounces and was 21.5 inches. He is a miracle in our lives. Tomorrow he will have been with us for one month. He is such an angel. Brett is an incredible Dad just as I knew he would. He loves coming home from school or work and having 'Daddy Time.' Brett and I are working hard to get our lives balanced with having a baby and going to school. It is a challenge but everything is working out. Being a mother is the most amazing thing in the world. Joshua makes me smile so much. It is amazing because even though he wakes up in the night and I need to change him all the time, I really don't mind. I love him so much. My life has taken a turn for the better. This past year has been full of wonderful changes. Brett and Joshua are the knew men in my life. I am so grateful that Heavenly Father has blessed us with such a sweet spirit. I know that he was placed in our lives for a reason and I know that Brett and I are going to learn so much from him. It is humbling to have such an incredible responsibility to raise him. We will do the best that we can but we know that we are going to need the Lord's help.

Hawaii>Oregon>San Diego

Brett and I flew from Eagle Crest to Portland Oregon to spend a day with his Uncle Jim and Aunt Candy before we drove to Bend for his annual family reunion at Eagle Crest. We really liked Portland. It was my first time there. We picked fresh blueberries and raspberries from Jim and Candy's garden. They had a beautiful home. At Eagle Crest I got to meet most of his family. My Mom was able to come too. It was so great to see her! We spent our days sleeping in, playing Over-The-Line, ping-pong, riding bikes, golfing and playing put-put. It was so nice to relax and spend time with family.

At the end of the week we said our goodbyes (until next year) and we drove with Brett's family from Bend, Oregon to San Diego in 17 hours. We definitely had our fix of fast food for the year with Burger King for breakfast, In n' Out for lunch and Carl's Jr. for dinner. The ride wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be.

Now we are back in Carlsbad staying with Brett's parents for 6 weeks. Brett is doing an internship with a law firm in down town San Diego. I am definitely seeing him a lot less than I have for a while. He is enjoying it and learning a lot. He also works on call as a four-caddy at The Grand Hotel. I did Golf school at Kip's (my father-in-laws) golf academy for the first few days that we were in California. I am finally starting to understand the game and I really enjoy playing. Since then I have been spending time preparing for the baby and doing odds and ends jobs for people.

Our baby is due in 11 weeks! We can't believe that it is coming so soon. He/She moves all the time and we can tell we will have an active child. It is really fun to follow the progression and read up on what is happening at each point in the pregnancy.

Getting Ready for San Diego

Parker has been visiting with us for the past week. We have enjoyed having him and his friend Mark here. Today for the 4th of July we will be going to Turtle Bay to BBQ with our friends and watch the fireworks.

A week ago Brett got in a bike accident when the chain of a borrowed bike came off while he was riding. He rolled over the handle bars and got pretty banged up. He sprained his wrist and his hip and is really scratched up. We are really grateful that his head and face weren't hurt at all. He didn't work for a few days and we were able to spend a lot of time together. Both of us have been reading the Chronicles of Narnia and really enjoying reading something other than books for school. It is refreshing. Finding and digging into the symbolism of those books is incredible. C.S. Lewis was definitely inspired while writing them.

We have been house sitting for our bishop and we have enjoyed seeing what it will be like to have our own home. We even have a dog, a cat, and fish. In the back yard they have mango, papaya, and lime trees. We have been making lots of smoothies. We have been thinking a lot about how we want our home to be. We want to have a simple home, a garden, lots of books, and good music; a Christ-centered home.

In less than a week we will be leaving for Brett's family reunion in Oregon. We are really excited to see his family and I am excited to meet everyone that I didn't meet at the wedding. After a week in Oregon we will be heading down to San Diego and will be staying with his family for 5 weeks. Brett has an internship with a law firm.

I have been getting really excited about being a Mom. Brett and I both think it would be best that I don't work when the baby comes and focus on the baby and finishing school. It would be the worst time to be overwhelmed with a job too and I can't wait to spend as much time as I can with the new addition to our family.

We recently found this amazing song on the piano. Check it out on youtube. Jon Schmidt is one of our new favorites! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v3d6SFcDys

ISLAND HOPPING

The end of last term so hectic.  Brett and I were soooo busy with finals.  When our finals were over we were able to go to Kauai and the Big Island for a week thanks to PJ and Kip (who had saved up their time share points).  Brett and I really needed it.  We spent 4 days in Kauai.  We drove up Waimea Canyon and did an 8 mile hike along the Na Pali Coast to the most incredible waterfall either of us had ever seen.  It was between 400 and 500 feet high.  Half of the hike was along mountains that drop straight into the ocean and the other half was inland through a valley.  Baby was doing great the whole time and Brett and I had plenty of food and water and took some nice breaks to look at the incredible views around us.  The other days we relaxed and enjoyed our time together.  When we arrived on the Big Island we had no idea what an incredible island it would be.  The first day we got up really early and spent the entire day driving around the island.  We found out that there are 7 different climates on the island.  There were some areas that were so green and hilly that they looked like Scotland, there were lava flows, lush rainforest, and even a ski resort on the island (on a 13,500 ft volcano).  We spent 13 hours driving around the entire island and made some stops.  The volcano that we saw was active and we got pretty close to a vent in one of the craters.  The next day we were exhausted and decided to relax.  We went snorkeling and saw 2 turtles swim right up to us and a ton of colorful fish.  Both of us agreed that it was the best snorkeling spot we had been to.  The last two days of our vacation we spent at the temple.  Since the Laie Temple is closed for renovations for awhile we were about to spend some time at the temple in Kona.  It was so peaceful and a great experience for the both of us.  It was a great trip.  We were grateful to get away for a little while and enjoy our time together.
Now we are back in Laie and are realizing that we have less that 4 months until we become parents! We have a lot to do to prepare.  Baby continues to move more and more and my belly is definitely getting bigger.  People keep coming up to me and asking me when I'm due and I keep forgetting that it is so obvious that I am pregnant.  Brett and I are back to working.  He is working 38hrs a week at the Reading and Writing Center as an English tutor and I am trying to keep up with him.  I still work for the McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding as well as for the student paper as a writer.  On the side I am trying to squeeze in teaching some tennis lessons.  We are working hard and enjoying a beautiful summer in Hawaii!

Ultrasound!!!

We had our major ultrasound this past Thursday! It was amazing! Our baby really looks like a baby! We saw a hand, legs, arms, feet, the spine, the heart (we could see all 4 chambers) and the face.  The face was so clear, it was incredible to see our baby for the first time.  We are still waiting to find our the gender but the doctor knows! We like surprises too much.  The baby looks healthy and said that everything is developing well.  We can't wait to see the new addition to our family.  Today I am 21 weeks and 2 days so we are over halfway through the pregnancy.  Brett and I have only a few days left of the term and then we will be working the rest of the summer.  We can't wait to have more time to relax and enjoy Hawaii :)

My 21st Birthday :)

Today I turned 21! Wow I'm legal now. I have realized how much my life has changed this past year. Last year at this time I was at Nationals in Houston and Brett sent me flowers. I was shocked! We had been talking because he was in California for the summer and at that time I was still taking classes in Hawaii. At that time I had a feeling that we would get married but who would have thought that I would be married and expecting a baby just a year later!

I am in Orlando, Florida for Nationals (my last tennis trip with the BYU-Hawaii team). It has been great to be here and to see my family. I really miss Brett though. This will be the longest we have been apart and 10 days is a long time!

My Mom and Parker drove up from Boca Raton last night and got here to spend my birthday with me. This morning we had practice from 8:30 to 9:30 and they came to watch. Then we went out to lunch at Chili's and Mom took me on a maternity clothes shopping spree for my birthday (it was a combined gift from my Mom and Dad). I was expecting to get one outfit and I was really excited. I tried on so many clothes and found a lot of really cute ones! They ended up getting me so many clothes! They said they thought it would be the most usefu thing for me right now. It is great because now I won't have to go maternity shopping and clothes definitely get expensive especially when they are cute. BABY IS KICKING AS I AM TYPING THIS!!!! Anyway....it was great and I got a little baby bottle with our purchase. I am starting to show a little bit which is fun. It is starting to seem a little more real. After we went shopping Parker and I took a little boat ride around the lake at the hotel they are staying at. Then Mom and Parker did the SLING SHOT! It was insane. It was like bungy jumping but they were shot up into the air. It was crazy! I obviously didn't do it because I am pregnant but looked so fun! Maybe Brett and I will do it some other time. The tennis team went out to a Chinese Buffet for dinner. They all sang happy birthday to me in their different languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Hungarian, Spanish and English) and Mom made me a great chocolate cake with strawberries and cool whip. When we came back to the hotel, Mom gave me a back massage. It was great. I talked to Brett a few times today and I wish he was here! It was a great birthday though. Well I'm off to bed. Baby and I need to get our rest.
